Storytelling School

Feb 17, 2021

Stories have the power to transform our lives in unexpected ways. My guest today, Jonathan Altfeld, is a dear friend and an absolutely fascinating person with one of the best jobs on the planet: he focuses on the language of story in his work. He has a decades-long fascination with the power of story to inspire us, help us wire around problems, and create new options for ourselves. That’s one of the biggest outcomes that he gets with his students--getting them unstuck and creating new possibilities for people.

In this episode, Jonathan and I dig into many powerful aspects of story  including why human beings are experts at getting in our own way, how Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) can influence your storytelling, what the impact of hypnotherapist Milton Erickson is on the field as a storyteller and so much more. Jonathan also unpacks his pattern matching process (You won’t want to miss this!) with plenty of stories to highlight throughout.

What you will learn in this episode:

  • How stories can bypass our conscious resistance
  • Why you should always start with the outcome in mind
  • How to implement active language in your communication

Who is Jonathan?

Jonathan Altfeld is a Neuro-Linguistic Programming trainer who has had a fascination for how stories connect and move us to grow and change for 30 years. He’s explored the works of Carl Jung, Joseph Cambell, hypnotherapist Milton Erickson and other NLP experts, mythology, and other literary influences in the process.

He’s had two career paths: one in artificial intelligence before starting to train and coach people globally in 1997. These days, he serves as a communication skills expert’s expert, a business and personal coach, and a consultant and is the author of several unique professional and personal development programs.

Jonathan’s focus mostly lies on the practical business use of NLP for more effective and influential training, coaching, scriptwriting, copywriting, and email crafting, along with his process for mapping expertise for knowledge mining and transfer. He remains deeply passionate about and fascinated with creating teaching stories and metaphors that help people, consciously and subconsciously, achieve extraordinary results that help evolve them to their next level.
